Stable Talk

‘So what did you guys decide to do?’ Emily looked over her glasses at me and folded a pancake in half, then in half again. I watched in horror as she crammed the whole thing in her mouth.

‘Em, that’s so gross!’ I sliced away a neat chunk of pancake with my knife and fork and waved it at Emily.‘This is the way it should be done.’

Em held her hand up in the ‘stop’ sign while she chewed. She swallowed and took a long drink of milk from her glass. ‘You gotta get it while the going’s good around this place. Don’t forget I’ve got a big brother and sister at home. I’m used to having to fight for food! You still haven’t answered me, by the way.’

‘An Open Day.’ I took a bite of pancake and grinned, sticky bits stuck all over my teeth. It was so good, all sweet and warm.

Em rolled her eyes. ‘And you reckon I’m gross! What kind of Open Day?’

‘It’s gonna be so cool,’ I gushed. ‘We’re having a cake stall and a white elephant stall and riding demonstrations and pony rides!’

‘What about food?’

‘I just said cake stall.’ I frowned.

‘You’ll need more than that. Just leave it to me.’ Em stacked her plate with another four pancakes.

‘What can you do from here?’ I said. Then it hit me.‘Oh wow, oh wow!’

‘What?’

‘Don’t you see? It’s on an exeat weekend—you could come home with me! It’s just what we talked about. It’s perfect!’ I was so excited I wanted to twirl pancakes on my fingertips.

‘Yes!’ Emily’s glasses steamed up instantly.

It all ran through my head. There was so much to do and so not enough time.

‘What’re you doing today?’ Em said, polishing off another pancake. I was amazed and fascinated all at once. Where did she put it all?

‘The usual,’ I said, shrugging. ‘English, Music, Art…Horsemanship!’

‘No wonder you look like the horse that got the hay.’ Em quickly gobbled down her last two pancakes and washed them down with a second glass of milk. We put our dirty dishes on the trolley and rushed out of the dining room. It was time for another day at Linley to begin.
